Because business owners are so busy and maybe wearing multiple hats all at the same time, we can sometimes not acknowledge our employees and the effort they put into keeping our businesses operating.

If you care about your business, then you should care about your employees. It’s been proven that employees who feel appreciated go above and beyond for the company they work in. Besides feeling like the position they hold plays a vital role in the running of the business they also feel accountable for their part of the overall picture. Because of this they are more likely to be long term employees and help your business flourish.

Here are 3 ways to help you keep your employees happy

1. Touch base with them personally. An employee should never feel like their boss is untouchable and sitting in an ivory tower. You can only gain the trust of people if you are approachable and can actually relate to them. There’s nothing worse than having a leader that doesn’t care about you and that’s how your employees will feel if you can’t get down from the pedestal. Take a note out of Richard Branson’s book!

2. Have their back! If an employee of yours is feeling the heat from a client then find out the facts. If it turns out that your very important employee has been poorly treated by the client, then support your workers and back them up. If that means letting go of that particular client then that’s the choice you have to make. If you have talented employees your return will come back 20 fold if they feel supported by you.

3. Reward creatively. There’s nothing like a post it note on a screen in the morning saying, “awesome job yesterday!”. Monetary rewards are always appreciated however, it’s also the small, personal rewards that trigger an emotional aspect and make people feel noticed and needed.

For your employees to believe in or care about the long term vision and success of your business, they need to feel like valued assets and not just a number. If they feel that their only role is to accomplish your ‘to-do-list’ then your employees will stick around for one hot minute. Take the time to recognise their efforts and they will want to be part of your bigger picture.
