Finding reliable, dedicated and trustworthy employees can be very difficult. That’s why it’s of the up-most importance to keep and retain the good employees you currently have. It only makes sense that the happier someone is at work, the longer they are going to stay in that job. Here are some good tips on how to keep your employees happy so they never want to leave your company.
- Give Recognition: Recognition comes in many different forms. When you see that an employee has gone above and beyond to complete a project on time, overcome a hurdle at work or are bringing something unique to your business it’s important you let them know how grateful you are. The words ‘thank you’ go a long way in making someone feel their hard work is being acknowledged.
- Team Spirit: The hours we spend at work will often be more than we spend at home with family. If you can master the concept of team spirit then your employees will feel at home when they come to work. Like they belong to a work ‘family’ rather than just to work.
- Know Your Employees: If you truly want your employees to succeed and be happy then it’s important that you take an interest in them. By asking them about what’s important to them career wise and where they see themselves going in the future you are showing that you care. If your employees know that you care about them and their future they will be less likely to resign and be more engaged at work.
- Fun Work Culture: If you look at companies like Google, Virgin and Apple what do they all have in common? A fun work culture. When people turn up to work they want to feel uplifted, light and energetic. Seeing the funny side of a situation is important. If you focus on the negatives only then that will leak into the atmosphere of the workplace and make your office feel down, not up!
- Encourage a Healthy Lifestyle: What makes endorphins sky rocket? Exercise and a healthy lifestyle, that’s what. This also goes back to point 2. You can incorporate exercise with team building activities to bring up team spirit in your company. Think out of the box and find an activity that your employees can get involved in.
- Don’t Nickle & Dime: It’s easy for business owners to start watching every cent that leaves the company account. The reason why this has an effect on your employee’s happiness and self-esteem is that if they see that you’re unwilling to spend on them then it can be interpreted as “they don’t think I’m worth it”. Shout Friday afternoon drinks, have nice cookies in the staff kitchen and every now and then give a nice bonus. You will see it come back 10 fold because your employees will feel valued and be more productive.
