Listening is a skill and let’s face it, CEO’s and Managers don’t always follow the two ears one mouth rule. If you’re finding yourself going around in circles trying to explain a certain circumstance or lodge a complaint with your boss then you’re not alone! The Australian Institute of Management took a poll of approximately 2200 employees and found that a massive 42% disagreed with the statement “management listens and responds to employee concerns”.

So how do you raise important issues with your boss and have them really listen to your concerns? Well, you can only do your best, try not to get frustrated and realise that your boss probably has a whole lot on their plate already.

Here are a few ways to get your bosses attention and listening ears on:

  • Come prepared with an outline of your case
  • So that your boss doesn’t ‘tune out’ come with a possible solution.
  • Arrive with a clear head, logical and definitely leave the heavy emotions at the door.
  • One thing is for sure – every boss, manager or CEO likes an employee that has a ‘can do’ attitude. If you choose to have a positive attitude, good working relationships and are a hard worker then you are more likely to be listened to.
  • Your manager is probably tackling more than just one issue at any given time. The key is to be succinct with your message.
  • Don’t expect an on the spot resolution. Once you and your boss have had a chat then let them go away and think about what route to take. If the issue is not pressing and you don’t hear anything for more than 3 working days then perhaps it would be a good idea to approach your boss (not guerrilla style!) and ask if they’ve had a chance to think about your conversation.
  • Schedule a time to talk – this sends the message, “What I have to say is important enough to warrant your time.”
  • Don’t tweet, post on FB or use any other social media platform to air your grievances or work related issues. This will just water down the importance of your message. A face to face conversation is always the way to go!
